Course Description:

Students will learn the basic health issues they may face.  They will learn what it takes to stay healthy and influences are prevalent in their every day living.

Instructional Philosophy:

Students will be expected to complete all assignments with high quality effort.  Discussion of all material will be completed before assignments are given.  Most classroom problems will be completed together, with some of work completed on their own.  Timelines will be given on when work is to be completed.  Assessment will be daily work, quizzes, and tests over every chapter with a semester test at the end of each semester.  This is a semester class.

2.12.1 Analyze how the family influences the health of individuals.

2.12.2 Analyze how culture supports and challenges health beliefs, practices, and behaviors.

2.12.3 Analyze how peers influence healthy and unhealthy behaviors.

2.12.4 Evaluate how the school and community can influence personal health practice and

behaviors.

2.12.5 Evaluate the influence of media on personal and family health. X

2.12.6 Evaluate the impact of technology on personal, family, and community health.

2.12.7 Analyze how the perceptions of norms influence healthy and unhealthy behaviors.

2.12.8 Analyze the influence of personal values and beliefs on individual health practices and

behaviors.

2.12.9 Analyze how some health risk behaviors can influence the likelihood of engaging in

unhealthy behaviors.

2.12.10 Analyze how public health policies and government regulations can influence health

promotion and disease prevention. X

3.12.1 Access valid and reliable health information products and services.

3.12.2 Evaluate the validity of health information, products, and services.

3.12.3 Use resources from home, school, and community that provide valid health information.

3.12.4 Determine the accessibility of products and services that enhance health.

3.12.5 Determine when professional health services may be required.

4.12.1 Use skills for communicating effectively with family, peers, and others to enhance health.

4.12.2 Demonstrate refusal, negotiation, and collaboration skills to enhance health and avoid or

reduce health risks.

4.12.3 Demonstrate strategies to prevent, manage, or resolve interpersonal conflicts without

harming self or others.

4.12.4 Demonstrate how to ask for and offer assistance to enhance the health of self and others.

4.12.5 Analyze refusal, negotiation, and collaboration skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce

health risks.

5.12.1 Examine barriers that can hinder healthy decision making. X

5.12.2 Determine the value of applying a thoughtful decision-making process in health-related

situations. X

5.12.3 Justify when individual or collaborative decision making is appropriate. X

5.12.4 Generate alternatives to health-related issues or problems. X

5.12.5 Predict the potential short-term and long-term impact of each alternative on self and others. X

5.12.6 Defend the healthy choice when making decisions. X

7.12.2 Demonstrate a variety of healthy practices and behaviors that will maintain or improve the

7.12.3 Demonstrate a variety of behaviors that avoid or reduce health risks to self and others.

8.12.1 Use accurate peer and societal norms to formulate a health-enhancing message.

8.12.2 Demonstrate how to persuade and support others to make positive health choices.

8.12.3 Work cooperatively as an advocate for improving personal, family, and community health.

8.12.4 Adapt health messages and communication techniques to a specific target audience.

Major Assignments:

1.  Students will complete a writing journal.  Each student will have a folder that contains writings from the chapter on the writing prompt given in the book.  These will be graded on a weekly or biweekly basis.

2.  Daily vocabulary and/or questions over the section.

3.  Chapter test and quizzes.

Grading Scale:

A 100-94 Excellent Work, all assignments completed and shows understanding of work
B 93-86 Good Work, all assignments completed and shows understanding of work
C 85-78 Decent work, missing a few assignments and shows understanding of most work, missing effort
D 77-70 Borderline Work, missing assignments and late assignments, basic understanding of most work, lack of effort
F 69 and below Minimal Effort, many missing assignments, understanding is below basic, does not meet expectations.

Grading Distribution:

Students will be graded based on total points.  Distribution will be as followed (approximate):

Tests & Quizzes 40%
Daily Assignments 40%
Writing Journals 20%

Extra Help:

Students are required by policy to come in at 7:30 for extra help in a subject.  There are also days available after school for a student to come in for extra help.  Contact me and I'll work something out to find a time that works to help the student.
